Ladakh Bike Ride: A Dream Journey on Two Wheels

Welcome to my blog! I’m Prasun Saha, a passionate traveler and motorcyclist, and today, I’m thrilled to share the detailed story of my dream ride to Ladakh. It was a journey of over 6,400 kilometers, filled with challenges, breathtaking views, and unforgettable memories.

Why Ladakh?

Ladakh has always been a dream destination for adventure seekers. Its rugged terrain, pristine lakes, and towering mountain passes offer an unmatched riding experience. For me, the idea of riding through the "Land of High Passes" was about more than just ticking a box—it was about pushing my limits and embracing the beauty of the unknown.

June was the perfect time to plan this ride. The roads were open, the weather was pleasant, and the risk of landslides was minimal. Plus, the clear skies offered stunning views of the snow-capped Himalayas.

Why Ladakh in June:

I chose June because it's the best time to ride to Ladakh—roads are accessible, and Mumbai’s monsoon hadn’t started yet. It also aligned perfectly with my leave schedule.

Preparation & Essentials:

I carried gear like a tire inflator, saddle bags, jerry cans for fuel, chain lube, winter gloves, and a power bank. Some items like the air seat didn’t prove very useful, but essentials like ORS were lifesavers during the ride.

Permits & Fuel Stops:

Environmental permits are mandatory for certain areas in Ladakh (https://lahdclehpermit.in/register-as-domestic). Fueling up isn’t an issue on the main routes, but carrying extra fuel in jerry cans is a must for remote areas like Pangong Lake and Umling La.

The Routes:

There are two primary routes—via Manali and via Jammu. I recommend starting from Jammu for a gradual altitude gain, which helps avoid issues like AMS. The roads are better maintained on this route compared to Manali.

Challenges on the Ride:

I faced some tough terrains, including sandy stretches and very bad roads on the way towards Pangong and Umling La. In one instance, I dropped my heavily loaded bike and needed help to lift it. Always double-check routes with locals as maps can be misleading.

Road & Network Conditions:

The roads in Ladakh are unpredictable. Some stretches, like the one between Pangong and Hanle, were extremely challenging. Mobile connectivity is limited to postpaid SIMs (preferably Jio, Airtel or BSNL), so downloading offline maps is crucial.

Budget Overview:

I’ve shared detailed expense breakdowns in my previous videos, but this ride required significant investment in gear, fuel, accommodations, and permits. Despite planning, costs can vary based on your route and stay preferences. See my expenses below

V-Strom 250 Performance:

My bike performed exceptionally well, even on rough terrains. The only hiccup was a minor issue with acceleration on steep climbs, which I later realized that may be due to over-revving on steep climb on my way towards Manali.

People & Safety:

The locals and fellow riders were very supportive. Whenever I was unsure about routes, asking for directions proved helpful. Ladakh feels safe and welcoming, but solo riders should avoid taking unnecessary risks.

Tips for Future Riders:

Start early each day to reach your destination before dark. Plan your itinerary but stay flexible. Avoid riding aggressively or experimenting with your bike in such challenging terrains. Always be prepared for changing weather and road conditions.

 Essential Gear

Safety and comfort were my top priorities. I packed:

  • Riding gear: A sturdy helmet, armored jacket, winter gloves, knee guards, and rain gear.
  • Bike tools: Tire inflator, puncture repair kit, chain lube, and extra clutch/brake cables.
  • Personal essentials: A medical kit (including AMS medication), ORS packets, sunscreen, and a power bank.

Closing Thoughts

Ladakh isn’t just a destination; it’s a journey that stays with you forever. The surreal landscapes, the thrill of riding through high passes, and the sense of accomplishment are unmatched.

This ride wasn’t just about exploring Ladakh; it was about discovering myself—my limits, my strengths, and my love for adventure.

If you’ve been dreaming about Ladakh, I urge you to make it happen. It’s an experience that will leave you richer in every sense.

Until next time, ride safe and keep exploring!
